Coop’s Friday morning began with a stack of maple bacon pancakes across from Ben. After they discussed current events and Coop told him about his mom’s hate mail, the conversation turned to Chandler’s case.

“We picked up Chandler’s shoes, and they’re working on a comparison. The footage isn’t great, so it’ll be tough. It doesn’t do him any favors, that’s for sure. We’re having a hard time connecting anyone else with a motive.” He finished a bite and added, “I’ve asked the techs to take a look at the visitor footage you sent my way. Not sure when they’ll get to it, but it’s on the list.”

Coop bobbed his head in agreement. “Got it. It’s a long shot. AB and I have been digging into backgrounds and have come up empty.”

“All you seem to be uncovering is more evidence against the guy.” Ben finished off his last pancake. “I’ll concede he's cooperative and his attorney backed up Chandler’s version of the conversation about the partnership.”

“I don’t know what to make of it all. I’ll admit the evidence is causing me to doubt him. My gut just says he didn’t do it. He couldn’t do it. Not the guy we knew.”

Ben’s cell buzzed, and he ended the call in a hurry and slid out of the booth. “Gotta run. Talk to you later.” He waved to Myrtle as he rushed outside and sped away.

“That boy works too hard,” said Myrtle, delivering the takeout container and the check.

“Sometimes I think it’s a ploy just to get me to buy his breakfast.” Coop laughed as he pulled out several bills from his wallet and left them atop the ticket. He slipped his jacket over his t-shirt of the day. White letters declaring, “Don’t blame yourself, let me do it,” stood out on the navy blue material.

“Y’all have a good day and a nice weekend. Tell AB howdy from me,” said Myrtle, gathering the dirty dishes and pocketing the tip.

Coop dropped Gus and AB’s breakfast at her desk. He dug into the background reports on those connected to the case. He finished the second one, and his phone rang with a call from Arlo, the Executive Chef at Borlund.

Coop took the call, and after a short conversation told AB he was heading to Borlund. He tossed his notepad and working file on the seat of the Jeep and rushed through the streets.

He checked in at the desk and retrieved a visitor badge before making his way to the cafeteria. He found Arlo in his office with Marco, the missing kitchen staffer who had been on a cruise until today.

Arlo shut the door and the threesome wedged into the small space. The Executive Chef introduced Coop and said, “Marco just got back to work today, and we were filling him in on the death of Mr. Borden. When he left, we had no idea it was murder. Anyway, Marco remembered something, and I thought we should call you as you said.”

Coop gave an enthusiastic nod. “Yes, I’ve eliminated several leads so new information would be great.
